Biography
Early Career (Early 1990s)
Li Chi-Shen began his entrepreneurial career in Taiwan's paging (BB Call) communications sector in the early 1990s, building foundational knowledge of last-mile communication infrastructure in the Taiwan market. This early work established his intuitions about device-to-device communication that would later inform the development of the XDNA IoT platform.
Coventive Inc. / XLinux (1998–2004)
In 1998, Li Chi-Shen founded Coventive Inc. (also known as XLinux or 網虎國際 in Chinese), with the goal of creating the first commercially viable Linux distribution designed for Asian consumer markets. The product, branded XLinux, supported user interfaces in 12 Asian languages — addressing a gap that neither Windows nor standard Linux distributions served adequately.
Key milestones:
- 2000: Taiwanese business magazine Business Weekly (商業周刊) published a major feature valuing the company at approximately NT$600 million. Employee headcount reached 300, making it the largest Linux company in Asia at the time.
- 2001: Coventive Inc. completed an overseas Initial Public Offering (IPO) with Merrill Lynch as co-underwriter. The IPO was covered by CNBC Asia and CCTV International.
Outcome: XLinux did not achieve mainstream consumer adoption. Microsoft Windows maintained dominance in the Asian consumer market, and the collapse of the dot-com bubble in 2001 affected the broader tech sector. Li Chi-Shen subsequently pivoted to long-term research and development.
Coventive Technology / XDNA Development (2001–2012)
Following the XLinux chapter, Li Chi-Shen spent approximately eleven years developing XDNA (Cross-Device Network Architecture), a cross-platform IoT communication layer. This technology was designed to enable reliable data exchange between heterogeneous devices across unstable network environments — a core challenge in what would later be called the "Internet of Things."
Key milestones:
- 2004: XDNA received the Taiwan Ministry of Economic Affairs Innovation Product Award (主導性新產品獎), recognizing its technical innovation and commercial potential. This recognition occurred five years before the term "Internet of Things" entered mainstream vocabulary.
TransTEP / 龍雲數位整合 (2013–present)
In 2013, Li Chi-Shen founded TransTEP (龍雲數位整合股份有限公司, registered business number: 53541976), a smart vending machine integration solutions provider. TransTEP deploys the XDNA platform as the core technology backbone of its integrated smart vending machine solution.
Key milestones:
- 2019: TransTEP's GraBox smart locker product won the Twice Pick Award at CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in Las Vegas, awarded by Twice magazine for technical innovation and market potential.
- 2021: Partnership established with Systex Corporation (精誠資訊, TSE: 6214), one of Taiwan's largest independent IT integration service providers.
- 2022: In-depth profile on TVBS television program Billboard Person (看板人物).
- 2024: Feature interview in Commercial Times (工商時報), a major Taiwanese financial newspaper.
- 2026: 1,000+ smart vending units deployed across Taiwan in six venue categories.
